ROBERT BENNETT’S JOURNEY

The initial phase of my career (1969 – 1982) included employment by a large multi-disciplinary Toronto based architectural engineering firm, where I progressed from design architect to project architect, (including management of a $100M international project), and latterly to head architect of the Edmonton office.

Since my professional registration with the AAA (1980), and as owner / operator of an Edmonton based  architectural consulting practice for over 35 years, I have encountered most aspects of our profession in Alberta, including:

• Managing a consulting firm which has ranged from a sole practicing architect to a staff of 22 people
• Many different building types for a variety of public and private sector clients
• Geographically diverse Alberta project locations; from Fort McKay and Zama City in the north, to Medicine Hat and Sterling in the south
• Most project delivery formats including design-bid-build, design-build, and construction management

My volunteer work with the AAA has spanned approximately 25 years, including:

• Member of the AAA Registration Committee
• AAA representative to the NCARB Architects Registration Examination (ARE)
• NCARB ARE Lateral Forces Exam Committee Chair
• AAA Registration Committee Chair
• Registrar

During the years of my NCARB involvement, I served regularly with U.S professionals, which gave me an understanding of regulatory fundamentals in the United States.
